Feature Film Posters are UP!

Designing a film poster can be more important than the film itself in some circumstances, so you need to get it right if you want to eventually sell your project.

Top tips when making a film poster:

1 - Alphabetical Name

First things first, have a film that starts with a letter that’s high up in the alphabet order so that people see it quickly when browsing through a film market/festival programme. Obviously make this a key feature of the poster that stands out so that it can be easily remembered. (I think I’ll add some black background to it still to make ours pop out more too!)

2 - Faces

If you want to draw eyes to your project, nothing brings people’s attention like faces. It makes people go “do I know that person” in their heads and inspect your poster closer. The more eyes you get to your poster, the more chance you have to sell.

3 - BIG and BOLD

If you can make your poster punchy and contrasted with a clearly directed and consistent style, it will hold in people’s minds for longer. Definitely worth spending a lot of time trying different styles and find what sticks before delving into your final poster designs.

4 - Known Cast on That Poster

If you have a big cast member in your film, you should definitely get them on the poster. I regrettably couldn’t make this work for all of our cast members. One of our most prolific cast members, Justin Hayward did not make it onto the main poster, as it couldn’t quite work with the layout and punchiness that I was going for. So I regrettably made the choice to go with a more minimalist look with fewer cast members, however it should always be a serious consideration.

However, I was able to include two award-winning actors on the posters, John Black and Stefan Chanyaem.

I was also able to make individual posters for each of the characters in the same style so that they could be used for individual promotion.
