Knowing my style of bringing animation into live-action with dynamic movement, FlipaClip reached out to me to showcase what their animation software can do!

Character design with cubism for FlipaClip client animation.

Character Design

To have the animation stand out among the many existing FlipaClip animations which often land in a ‘web toon’ style, I based the character off of the style of Cubism to help their design language feel contrasting to the background video.

Motion

My usual workflow combines 2D animation software and compositing software to help objects feel like they are part of a live-action scene, however being limited to FlipaClip only without a compositing software I had to find a way around this limitation.

Instead of having a continuously moving camera in a real world environment, the camera would quickly move between key scenes with snappy transitions between each one, allowing for dynamic motion without the need for careful motion tracking.

Layering

FlipaClip has come a long way and included clipping masks and blend modes which allowed the layers to sit together neatly and create a consistent shadow that worked across all layers beneath it.

Background

The background was made using a 360 camera, choreographing out the movement for each of the key perspectives in the storyboard and selecting the focal length, camera angle and distortion in post-production before importing this as the background footage to the FlipaClip project file.
